The first time I was part of a 5S training program was with a typical American plastic injection molding shop with about 10 mold makers. We had been in business as long as plastic molding was a business, so there was a lot of ” stuff” laying around. It was true that everything had it’s place, the only problem was that nobody knew what that was!.

I was very doubtful of this programconcept at first because I had spun my wheels for so long on every new program that the management learned at the latest seminar. So, we just figured 5S was another well-meant, but futile idea fostered by out-of-touch managers.

Since it was a Japanese program, this managed to get my attention though. At the time, they were conquering our auto industry and I figured they must know something we didn’t.

What do you need to begin with 5S?

Not much, mostly time and a will to do it. Once you learn the technique, it is a matter of training your employees to see the benefits and making it a permanent policy. It is essential that the decision is supported by management, otherwise it will be just another well-meaning program.

What sort of time frame are we looking at?

It took us about a week to actually complete the project. We had made a lot of [headway], but it was essential that we completely finish the project. I’m certain that things would have reverted to the old ways if we had not followed all five steps. It is very difficult to change a company culture, but it can be done.

There were some guys were very negative, but once they began to see the results their complaints disappeared natural leaders you need to motivate. Is it worth the effort? Yes, it is very much well worth the effort.

The time spent with 5S implementation will most certainly pay for itself in a short time. just considering the hours spent looking for things, you would quickly justify the expense; not to mention the satisfaction you feel from working in a well-organized and efficient environment.

5S is just one part of the lean manufacturing process. It is also essential that everyone follows through, so the benefits can be permanent. Take pains to lay a solid foundation by mastering the basics.

To make the most of your time you need to be focused on what it is you want to achieve. Being focused on the smaller picture rather than the big one will throw you off course. Look at where your time goes and consider if you can make better use of it. Different people view time management in some rather different ways. So if you are working in a group you all need to understand the same message and what you are trying to achieve.

Short term and long term goals are the two types of time management goals. All of them will need you to list what and when things need to be completed. Short term goals would be those things that must happen tomorrow or within a year or two. Long term time management goals are where we plan to be in five to ten years time.

We all want fast results but the big picture is where it is important to aim. Whatever else you do keep a focus on how you are working towards the longer term aims you have. Things have to change as new things are discovered and happen so regularly amend your goals to match the situation.

Each day you should be doing something that is using time management skills to achieve your aims. Many people run around in circles worrying about the small things so make sure you avoid that failing. Spend some of your time considering how you can make the most of the time you have to reach your long term goals

Keep a regular check on where your time is spent and if that is wise and productive. Try to look with an impartial eye as though you were somebody else. Emotion gets in the way of logical planning so this should help. Your free time should be considered as well and using time management skills can help to make the most of your relaxation time.
